I read the English version, dude was definitely German-challenged, or at least his translator or both.

I thought this was one constant, even in GDR times, that the beer was good. He seems to indicate it's even worse than Schlitz, is that true?

What are you still doing up anyways, on the beer side: if you had only East German money, and you frequented a normal east german place, then your beer, especially in the summer, was most likely some cloudy formaldehyde tasting substance. However, if you could afford the Interhotels (with western currency), or had "alot" of East German money (to afford the beer prices in the "Delikat" shops), or you knew someone that knew someone that you could trade something with, then you might have a really good Radeberger, Wernesgruener etc in your hand. I remember my Dad being totally proud for organizing 2 or 3 cases of Radeberger for the occasion of my communion. I only got to drink one bottle tho... -Th

Well, the "constant thing" is a (positive) prejudice. Believe it or not, there was (and is) still a notable chance that the beer in a german pub ("Kneipe") tastes crappy. There is enough cheap stuff around and often there are serious cleaning problems. ...and what could you expect for 0,49 aluminum DDR-Mark? Still possible that for Americans the beer is like heaven on earth, you are right
However the question is, why the guy ordered three of these formaldehyde cocktails instead of changing the location.
Habt ihr auch mal daran gedacht das wir älteren in der DDR kein Englisch gelernt haben! Oder will man hier Leute ausgrenzen.Womit wir wieder beim Thema Grenze wären.

Hallo Bergmensch,
dieses Forum innerhalb des Forums wurde eingerichtet, um englischsprechenden die Gelegenheit zu geben mal was zu fragen und dazu Antworten zu bekommen.
Da CaptnDelta oder ich ab und zu etwas poste soll dazu dienen, dass hier Lesestoff vorhanden ist. Somit wird jemand ausserhalb der deutschsprachigen "Grenze" nicht ausgeschlossen.

@ Bergmensch, bleib mal locker. Die obigen Beiträge entstammen einem extra ausgewiesenen englisch-sprachigen Teil des Forums. Ich denke mal, Du spielst auf die Unsitte an, hier im Lande unsere Sprache mit scheinbar und echten englischen Begriffen zu verpanschen. Hier im Forum brauchst Du Dir da keine Sorgen zu machen. Mindestens einer der oben diskutierenden ist hier auch ausgewiesener Übersetzer. Ich denke, wenn Du ihn fragst, wird er Dir gerne eine Variante in Deutsch liefern.

OK, thanks. That explains it, even though I am surprised. I always figured that even though a lot of things in the GDR weren't up to Western standards, that the basics were still good: booze, cigarettes and ....
